Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reiterated Ghana’s commitment to supporting an amicable and lasting resolution to the longstanding dispute over Western Sahara. The Foreign Minister made the remarks when he granted an audience to Tayeb Al-Siddiq Al-Bashir, an envoy of Western Sahara, as Ghana continued its diplomatic engagement on the issue. According to Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana’s desire to see the historical impasse resolved peacefully through dialogue and negotiations. The Ministry also clarified that Ghana’s decision of January 6, 2025, has not been reversed. At the same time, the Government has welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which supports the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating negotiations, taking Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal as a basis for discussions aimed at achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution consistent with the UN Charter. Resolution 2797, adopted on 31 October 2025, extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until 31 October 2026. It called on the parties to engage in discussions without preconditions, while stating that the negotiations should provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara and lead to a mutually acceptable political solution. Ghana’s latest position therefore combines its continued diplomatic engagement with its existing policy position, while acknowledging the framework established by the UN Security Council resolution. The Ministry said Ghana remains committed to positive engagements with all parties and the international community in pursuit of lasting peace and justice in Western Sahara. The meeting comes amid renewed international diplomatic efforts to advance negotiations over the decades-old dispute, with the United Nations continuing to facilitate dialogue between the parties.
