Ibba Lanka · Oct 13, 2026

The visit, which took place on Monday, October 12, 2026, formed part of efforts to monitor the implementation of digital initiatives, improve access to electronic communication services and expand opportunities for digital skills development.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has led a delegation of officials from the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) on a tour of selected digital centres in the Ashanti Region to assess infrastructure and engage learners under the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP).

The visit, which took place on Monday, October 12, 2026, formed part of efforts to monitor the implementation of digital initiatives, improve access to electronic communication services and expand opportunities for digital skills development.

The delegation included GIFEC Administrator, Dr. Sofo Tanko Rashid-Computer.

During the tour, the Minister visited the KNUST One Million Coders Centre and the Kwadaso Community Information Centre, where he interacted with learners and highlighted the importance of equipping young people with digital skills to take advantage of emerging employment and business opportunities.

Mr George said the growing digital economy presented opportunities for young people but stressed the need for them to acquire relevant skills to remain competitive in an increasingly technology-driven world.

The engagements also drew attention to the need for properly equipped training facilities and reliable internet connectivity to support effective learning and improve access to digital education.

The delegation's itinerary included a courtesy call on the Ashanti Regional Minister at the Regional Coordinating Council in Kumasi, engagements with stakeholders at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and visits to additional community information centres.

These included the Kwadaso Regional Information Centre, the Asawase Community Information Centre in Asokore Mampong, and the Nkwantakese Community Information Centre in the Afigya Kwabre North District.

Beyond the One Million Coders Programme, the Minister highlighted the need for greater accountability in the implementation of the Rural Telephony Project.

He said contractors' implementation reports needed to be independently verified to establish the actual state of work on the ground. He also indicated that a nationwide audit of the project was expected to begin in the coming weeks to identify outstanding works, establish implementation gaps and help improve connectivity in underserved communities.

GIFEC's participation in the exercise reflects its role in supporting efforts to bridge Ghana's digital divide through improved access to electronic communications infrastructure, community digital facilities and related development initiatives.

The tour underscores the Ministry's and GIFEC's focus on monitoring digital projects, strengthening infrastructure and expanding access to digital skills training for young people and communities across the country.

The One Million Coders Programme is intended to help equip participants with relevant digital competencies that can support employment, entrepreneurship and participation in Ghana's growing digital economy.
